Where Do Pimples Come From During All That Hot Summer Fun?

Summer means sunshine, vacations, outdoor activities—and for many people, more breakouts. Heat, humidity, sweat, sunscreen, and excess oil can all contribute to clogged pores and acne flare-ups.

When skin cells and sebum (oil) don't shed properly, they can become trapped deep within the hair follicle, creating a plug that clogs the pore. As more oil builds up behind the blockage, it creates the perfect environment for acne-causing bacteria to multiply. This triggers inflammation, redness, swelling, and eventually...a pimple is born!

One surprising fact is that it takes about 30 days for a pimple to form. So, if you change your skincare routine and notice a breakout a few days later, the new product probably isn't to blame. That blemish has likely been developing for weeks.

What Else Contributes to Breakouts?

Skipping your skincare routine: Consistency is one of the biggest keys to clear skin. Cleanse your skin twice a day, spending about two minutes each time to thoroughly remove oil, sweat, sunscreen, and debris. Regular exfoliation helps prevent dead skin cells from clogging pores, while a toner can refine pores and improve the absorption of your treatment products.

Using pore-clogging ingredients: Not all skincare and makeup products are created equal. Some moisturizers, foundations, and sunscreens contain ingredients that can clog pores, including isopropyl myristate, lanolin, laureth-4, and even coconut oil. Choosing non-comedogenic products can make a noticeable difference for acne-prone skin.

Stress:

Stress increases cortisol levels, which can stimulate oil production. Excess oil combines with dead skin cells, increasing the likelihood of clogged pores and breakouts. Finding healthy ways to manage stress can benefit both your overall health and your complexion.

Low zinc intake:

Zinc plays an important role in healthy skin by supporting cell turnover, reducing inflammation, helping regulate oil production, and assisting with vitamin A transport. Good dietary sources include lean beef, chicken, nuts, beans, whole grains, spinach, avocados, and dairy products. If you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, you may want to discuss zinc supplementation with your healthcare provider, as plant-based sources are not always absorbed as efficiently.

Helping Pimples Heal Faster

A blemish may last anywhere from a few days to several weeks, depending on its severity and your body's inflammatory res

ponse. Applying ice to the area for two to three minutes, up to three times daily, can help reduce swelling and calm inflammation.

Our Problematic Skin Treatment, combined with an effective home care routine, can significantly improve acne-prone skin. Ingredients such as salicylic acid, mandelic acid, sulfur, lactic acid, and benzoyl peroxide work to reduce bacteria, clear congestion, calm inflammation, and speed the healing process.

Don't let summer breakouts keep you from enjoying the season. With consistent skincare, the right products, and professional treatments, you can keep your complexion looking clear, healthy, and glowing all summer long!
